Anyone who's putted on a practice green in the early morning and again in the afternoon knows the speed isn't the same. Dew, mowing schedule, and heat all shift stimp reading throughout the day — which makes it a genuinely difficult surface to fit a putter on with any precision.
Why a Fixed Stimp Reading Matters
Putter length and lie recommendations depend partly on how a stroke behaves at a given speed. Testing across a session where the green is quietly speeding up or slowing down means comparing stroke data against a moving target, not a fixed one.
What the Lab Holds Constant
Our putting lab surface is checked and maintained to hold a single stimp reading across every session, regardless of time of day or season. That means a stroke logged at 9am and one logged at 5pm are being measured against the exact same rolling conditions.
A putter fitting is only as reliable as the surface it happens on. A green that changes speed mid-session is measuring the grass as much as the stroke.
Simulated Break, Held Fixed
The lab can also hold a specific break angle constant across repeated attempts, which lets us isolate stroke consistency from green-reading skill — useful when the question is really "does this putter fit your stroke," not "can you read this particular green."
What It Can't Replace
A calibrated indoor lab won't replicate every real green you'll ever putt on, and it isn't meant to. What it gives you is a fixed, repeatable baseline to fit length, lie, and face balance against — which is exactly the part of putting that shouldn't depend on what the grass did that morning.
